We are very proud of our Preps and all that they have learnt about how living things grow and change.

What have you discovered? What have you noticed? What have you learnt?

Good-bye to our chicks!

We could not believe how quickly our little chicks started to grow and change. We noticed that their baby down feathers were being replaced with new feathers. We also noticed that our slightly older chicks had begun to grow tail feathers! They were also becoming more active and fluttery in the playpen. It was time for our little chicks to go to their new home on the farm. We have loved watching them grow and change. We have also learnt so much about what living things need to grow. We think that all living things need lots of love to help them grow!

Here we are holding our chicks. They felt warm and soft. We were very careful to hold them properly so that they would feel safe and comfortable. We will miss our chicks especially their lovely cheeping sounds that greeted us everyday.

Egg-citing Times in Prep

We have been very excited to welcome some special visitors to the Prep classrooms this week. The Henny Penny Hatching program has allowed us to watch the miracle of new life. We are also learning how to care for our chicks and that they need lots of things to help them grow and change. We will post our discoveries next week.

Look! A brand new chick in the incubator.

It is hard work coming into the world.

Why is there a light in the playpen?

The playpen keeps our chicks safe.

We were very lucky to watch one of our chicks hatch right before our eyes. In the words of one of our Prep’s – ‘It’s adorable!’

What Do Living Things Need To Grow and Change?

Our Inquiry for this term is all about what living things need to grow and change. To start, we needed to think about living and non living things. We sorted pictures into the categories of Living, Used to be living and Non-Living. This helped us to think about what do living things need to grow and change? To help us find out we planted our very own Hairy Heads! We will watch (observe) what happens to our Hairy Heads over the coming days and weeks and we will record (collect data) some of our observations just like real scientists do.

Here are our Hairy Heads!

I wonder what will happen?

How will our Hairy Heads grow and change?

What do you think our Hairy Heads will need to grow and change?

Welcome to our new Preps!

We have had a very busy start to 2017. The Preps have been amazing and shown great excitement for all our activities. We have just finished our swimming program and last Monday we had our twilight sports carnival. We are very grateful to all our parents who have supported such a wonderful start to the year.

We are excited to share lots of new learning through our blog. Please ask questions and make comments. There is a ‘How to make a comment’ page at the top of the blog. Let us know if you have any issues commenting or would like some help. The children are always very excited to see comments from their families. Our blog is also a great conversation starter at home between you and your child.

Generally at the end of a post we ask a question or questions to keep the learning conversation going between home and school. The blog can be shared with family members who live interstate or overseas. The world is a smaller place when blogging. Follow us on twitter @slprepk and receive an alert when a new post has been added to the blog.

We look forward to a wonderful year of sharing!
